It’s not a discovery tool. Neither is it for collecting, strictly speaking. Instead, Cumulus.fm ( direct link ) is right in between — the place where you might keep the list of music you need to check out before you buy it or add it to your cloud thing , which sure beats a text file or a pad of paper .

Evolver.fm put that question, in various forms, to Ustav Agarwal, founder of nwplyng , a music sharing app with gamification elements which has been likened to Foursquare crossed with Instagram plus Twitter #music for the social music app scene. Despite the profusion of social music apps and services, Agarwal and nwplyng have managed to differentiate themselves, drawing attention from Apple, The Next Web, and others, although it’s hard to say how many people are actually using it.

Kollekt.fm, announced this week at TechCrunch Disrupt, aims to help music listeners corral music from Facebook, SoundCloud, and YouTube, so they can keep it all in one tidy place. We’ve been testing it for a while, but to be nice, we waited until the company’s presentation to post our review. You’re welcome.

Boston’s hi-fi audio roots run deep. Companies like AR, KLH, Advent, EPI, Bose, Cizek, H.H.Scott, a/d/s/, Apogee Acoustics, Burhoe, Genesis, Snell, Cambridge SoundWorks and more have set up shop over the years and anchored Boston as an ideal place to develop the next great audio product. Although the search for the ultimate listening experience is likely an unending one, it rarely dissuades audiophiles from spending money to chase that sonic nirvana.

Public radio stations have long been the vanguard of organic music discovery. Beck, Lorde, Spoon, and Vampire Weekend are just a few who got their starts on public radio and have since gone on to have prolific careers. Alongside YouTube’s meteoric rise, visual music content like music videos, live recordings, artist interviews, and even simple lyric videos have returned.

Zumix began as a grassroots music program providing kids in East Boston a safe haven to go to after school where they could write and make music. Fast forward over 20 years and Zumix has expanded to include events like Battle of the Bands, concerts, a range of music classes, block parties, an online radio broadcast, and finally, after decades of waiting, an FM station (94.9).

To say that the process of creating a custom set of Uvero earbuds was mind-bogglingly cool is truly an understatement. The Uvero’s are a new earbud line from Wakefield-based Lantos Technologies. The earbuds seek to solve the age-old problem of providing the perfect fit. The Uvero’s were born when Lantos, traditionally a medical devices company, decided to make earbud tips based on the custom earbud scanning and 3D printing process developed in MIT’s labs by acclaimed researcher Doug Hart.

“We launched Amplitude way back in 2003 and not a lot of people bought that game, but the people that did, really liked it,” said a Harmonix employee on stage at the Amplitude Live Event commemorating the release of a modern remake of the game developer’s original hit, Amplitude. You may recognize the name Harmonix as the Boston area music-game developer that built the world-beating Rock Band series.

Make music more accessible and share the love of music through education: These are the defining messages Nabi Music Center, a website and service connecting children (or anyone) with instructors throughout Boston, seeks to spread. Nabi, conceived and founded by Vanessa Charles, is the first of its kind: an intuitively designed portal which helps parents find talented independent music instructors nearby for their children.

Inevitably, the responsibility of playing music at a get-together falls on one or two people who spend their night making sure the music never abruptly stops, and who end up fielding requests all night to keep the guests content. On the flip side, partygoers never want to deal with a cable/Bluetooth hog who thinks he’s got the best tunes (but doesn’t).

Since I last spoke with the founders of the music-sharing app, Cymbal, a slew of things have changed: the app hit the app store; the team has gained funding, features, and personnel (Charlie Kaplan, the head of growth and operations); and they changed their name from the original Anthem.
